Southwestern Chair Redo

This old and "kinda creepy" oak chair needed a total makeover.

It was missing arms

that were removed; with screws left behind.

It was also weather distressed.

A dark and dreary looking piece.

After removing the screws, there were two that couldn't be taken out easily. They were cut off where the arms used to be. So I used a grinder to take them down to the wood surface.

And sanded the entire chair in preparation for painting.

I used a pretty turquoise or "aqua" color: "Bliss" by Country Chic Paint.

I applied one thin coat, so that some of the wood grain could still show through most areas. It's a distress technique I prefer over distress sanding later. It's a more finished look.

While the paint was drying, I reupholstered the seat with new foam and fabric. The upholstery fabric is a nice rugged one with southwest flair. (Found at Hobby Lobby)

After posting all of the previous chair upholstery "how to do's" before, I won't go through the process here.

Basically, removed the staples and nails and added new foam; then recovered.

After the chair dried, I used Dark Antiquing Wax to bring out all of the crevices and details.

The wax also gives a nice sealed finish.

  

I did sand the tops just slightly for more line detail to show.

The chair has a whole new personality now.

It's happy and colorful.
