We recently adopted a rescue dog. He's a Malamute/Husky mix, so he's a really big teddy bear. After buying everything he needed, which included 2 extra large dog beds... would you believe, he tried to fit himself into our other dog's curved bed? Our other dog... was a dachshund. Obviously the fit wasn't working out for my new sidekick named Danny.
Looking for one similar that Danny could fit into without breaking the budget was somewhat challenging. My husband suggested that I should just go ahead make one... and... match our living room furniture... which is leather upholstered with rolled arms and arched backrests.
It was such a coincidence that Leather Hide Store contacted me regarding a collaboration. The timing couldn't be more perfect!
The company generously supplied me with two beautiful remnants for my project! And because the size of this sofa bed is quite large, I used both, plus pieces from a long leather coat to complete the upholstered leather sofa.
Disclosure: Although this post is considered sponsored, all opinions are 100% my own.
Then to add rolled arms, I padded the sides with foam. And, added orthopedic foam to the base and onto the backrest.
To make upholstering with leather onto the base and around the arms easier, I kept the backrest to the side for attaching later. I used the heavier and thicker distressed Sable leather on the arms. (Where more wear could be possible.)
For the base of the sofa bed, I used a tooled leather look fabric. (This fabric is like vinyl, for cleaning purposes where dampness could occur from wet paws, drooling, and bathed fur.)
Trying the orthopedic pad on for size; the behind the scenes with ... the now proclaimed: Danny the DIY Dog.
Done yet?
Nope.
Hold your bones!
I finished the sofa backrest with the lighter, and softer Sable leather. It's my favorite color of leather.
To finish off the seams, I used pieces I cut off a long leather coat (thrift shop- and half price) in a color that matched the darker distressed leather. I secured the trim with upholstery nails. Where the upholstered back was padded thickly, I ended the trim with matching decorated belt ends.
I found the perfect set of wooden furniture feet at the thrift shop that suited the height of the sofa from the floor.
The back of the sofa is upholstered from the skirting of the long leather coat and was trimmed off with upholstery nails.
The finished size of the sofa bed is 35" deep by 50" wide and 26" high.
I probably could have found a loveseat and reupholstered it! But, I must say it's easier to build. The time it takes to remove old fabrics and stuffing, is equal or less than building your frame.
And here we are... all set up!
The sofa platform is padded, but I can add Dan's cooling gel pad, or other pads and blankets with plenty of room for the big guy.
Because Dan is old, and can't jump upwards onto our living room sofas, he can easily step onto his own.
It should last many years.
I can even sit on it with him.
He seems to approve.
It was a big job and Dan is glad it's over. He's exhausted.
