Chair Makeover ~ Miss Velvet

This chair was in desperate need of a makeover.  The finish was worn off and the upholstery was wearing thin.

The little details and those curvy legs were prime candidates for a paint job.

To start, I removed the seat.

Then chose to use this super pretty cheetah print.  A stretch velvet fabric that will be amazing for the seat.

The stretch fabric was so easy to work with. (I'm going to keep this in mind for big overstuffing projects.)

Then I spray painted the entire chair.

When dried, I sanded some of the areas of the chair that I wanted to have the base color showing through.

Where I sanded off too much...

 I stained.

After the stain dried, I added a coat of polyurethane to the entire chair.

After the clear coat dried...

I replaced the soft velvety seat.

And now looking so... lady like.  So exotic. Those legs and bead necklace like details...so sophisticatedly stylish in her own right.  So...  Miss Velvet shall be her name...

with that lush seat, sleek lines and wandering curves.

She is so fitting for a desk.

Or in the boudoir sitting at a dressing table.

It doesn't matter where she ends up because she sure is "purrr-ty!"

  2. Wow! Great job giving new life to this 1980's nightmare chair! I love refinishing furniture too. I love the tip to stain over parts that are sanded too much. Your chair has the right amount of distressing, coloring, and highlighting the beautiful details. Great job!

  14. Great post! I'm planning on reupholstering 2 of my kitchen charis that look a lot like this, so this was very helpful. What is the stretch fabric made of so I can know what to look for? About how much did you need to cover the seat? And I like your tip about staining where you sanded too much :) Visiting from Pin Worthy Wednesday and pinning this post :)

  16. Pssst... the fabric is even more unusual. It's a recycled a designer blouse that I no longer wear.

  18. I'm so glad the instructions help. I put the time into photos and short instructions with high hopes to help anyone who wants to work on their own projects. Most often they are quite easy. When there are tough spots, I will explain them. Thank you so much, Sarah!

  22. Hi Dot! If I told you this was a designer top that I know longer wear, it could throw you off. But it was. A boat neck, 3/4 sleeve, pullover blouse. I wish I took photos of it for you before, but I was crunched for time last week with so many projects due by the 20th that I've limited pictures on all of them.

Let me tell you though, the top was about 17" across the flat front and 20" from the neck to the waist hem. The seat of the chair is 17" across the back, 21" across the front by 18" deep. I was able to slip the seat into the blouse and pull the side seams under the seat and staple it in place.

The velvet fabric has spandex in it. It's a mix of polyester, lycra and spandex. For your chairs, I'd get one yard of fabric to cover both. Just take your seat measurements with you when choosing the fabric, Add the sides to allow enough material to wrap under the seat.

I hope that helps! I can't wait to see how you do!

  23. Ha! When working on pieces you kind of develop a relationship with them while envisioning the outcome. This one was like a big sexy sister, getting all better looking and making me wish I looked so good. LOL!
    Thank you, Lauren! :)

  24. I have a similar chair that I painted last fall: http://wp.me/p3IPNL-V. I have thought about changing the seat, but for now it's just painted and sitting on my front deck, holding a watering can and lantern. Your chair turned out well!

  28. Love this! Miss Velvet is adorable. I just purchased a set of four old chairs that I want to re-do for my courtyard. I am thinking of turning them into a curved bench. But, I might keep them as individual chairs... we'll just have to see. :)

Just stopped by from the Home Matters Linky Party.
