Road Rescue Side Table

A road rescue piece brought to life with a creamy turquoise color.

It's nice when a friend thinks of you. It's even better when they know you.  I had a friend grab this off the road and bring it to me just because he knew I would do it.  It had a little bit of potential and I had a little bit of doubt. A 1.5" hole in the upper left corner for starters. UGH.  Wobbly legs, lacking back bottom support, screws sticking out everywhere, wood cracks and the word "CAT" pencil carved  on the top. There went my original desire to do a smooth black top. It was not going to end up completely smooth, so distressing or aging it was a must. So, I rolled up my sleeves and got at it.

I started with plugging the hole with wood slivers and glue; horizontal at the bottom of the hole and then glued in vertical slivers and topped it with another small piece horizontally to cap it. When the glue set (it was messy dripping down the leg, but eventually slowed down) I added joint compound and wood putty.

While the hole was patching up, I sanded the top down bare.

More putty to go.
Now to color the top.

After adding walnut finishing stain, the grain looked like I could turn it into black walnut and hide the hole repair.
Using onyx wipe on finish, I blended it into the walnut color  for the top.

It worked!

After getting the top to where I liked it, I put a coat of lacquer on it.

Knobs from a hutch redo works for this.

I painted the knobs with flat black.

A trim piece that I removed from the laundry hutch redo works for the missing leg support. I measured and cut it to fit. Attached by pilot holes and long screws.

I love this color. This particular paint is not right for furniture, but by doing it the hard way, it worked.
Painting the table with the chalky paint was phase one.

Then clear coat with lacquer was phase two.

Fast drying! :)

Dried.

Phase three, getting all artistic, painting in the old distressed look all over the table.  Working the paint into all crevices.

It took awhile for the little art brush details, so I sat in the sun :)

Now that the detail brushing was done, phase four... clear coat again with lacquer.  This process is longer than most do it. The popular method is to do paint layers and scrape or sand. I prefer my method, to avoid "chippies".  The look is more finished and permanent.

Finally done. The longest part of the project was the small brush painting.

Old, but new again!

Stunning makeover - love the color! When you showed the turquoise craft paint and said you did it the hard way, what did you mean? Did you make your own chalk paint using the craft paint for color or did you color match ready made chalk paint? I found this over at the I Gotta Create Party but noticed you've also posted at the our new Wake Up Wednesday party - awesome!!

  2. Thank you, Marie :)

I used this paint right out of the bottle. When it dried, it was very chalky. Leaving it chalky would make it difficult to paint the black the way I wanted to. I needed a smooth surface. So I had to clear coat the turquoise paint prior to applying the black paint. Then, clear coated again. This was a four step process; all brushed on. It's not as easy as the one or two coat spraying or brushing that I'm used to. :)

Thank you for the link up. I enjoy the posts.

  17. I love it when you find a treasure in the trash! You did a great job with this table. My most recent 'trash' find was a long oak bench that I painted in red and turquoise. Shaunna @ Tempting Thyme

  18. This had to be the most amazing piece I encountered. I almost passed on it. It really was loved before by someone who tried to keep it together. It was screwed together here and there; the drawer bottom missing, so they converted it to a stationary one. It was glued and failed in numerous places. Back leg support was broken off and gone, so it was screwed to a wall to keep it from wobbling (the screws were still in it through the back). I had to try to salvage it. Reinforcing it and refinishing it certainly did it justice. I wanted so much to do turquoise and ended up loving it. Isn't if funny something so simply terrible can end up all renewed!? I'm going to check out your trash to treasure, hopefully you have it posted. It's exciting :) Thank you, Shaunna.

  27. Hi Joy!
That trim is from a hutch break down that I re-used for a laundry cabinet. Isn't it funny how nothing is wasted. Thank you for visiting. :)

  28. I thought the turquoise would be too bold, but with the dark accents it blended nicely. Thank you, Wendi. :)

Oh my this is so beautiful (and the perfect color for my decor *wink, wink*)...I never think to do these kinds of things but I definitely need to put a project like this on my spring "to do" list because I just love this! Turquoise is one of my absolute favorite colors!

  32. Wow, your talent for restoring furniture is incredible. I have a really nice dresser that just needs some restoring. I have been trying to decide what I want to do with it but my mind isn't very creative. I think I may just take it in for a furniture restorer and have them work my magic. That would take a lot less time and energy for me!
