Get Inspired

Sometimes things will become created out of need. You find yourself in situations that an item, a room or an outdoor space is screaming for an inexpensive improvement. Often times too, we have trouble parting with something due to sentimental value or you just inherited an item. (You can't possibly toss out Aunt Nellie's dresser but it is so outdated or does not match.) In these circumstances you reach out for ideas and solutions. The possibilities can be endless and rewarding. Browsing through blogs such as mine and friends here on the net, you'll find that help is available on how to get inspired.

Here are some creative re-purposing ideas to jump-start your imagination:

● Doors as bed headboards, tabletops, wainscoting, benches, desktops, counter-tops, and hinged together as a room screen.

● Windows as serving trays, photo frames and mirrors.

● Poured concrete or any kind of flooring as a kitchen counter top.

● Unusual furniture items used for different functions such as a desk turned into a kitchen island.

● Industrial items or natural outdoors wood items used as coffee table bases.

● Tree branches, tools, horseshoes, kitchen utensils, vintage door knobs or cabinet knobs installed as coat and towel hooks.

● Vintage architectural items such as skeleton keys and chandelier crystals used in jewelry, key chains or wind chimes.

● Vintage lighting fixtures rewired to fit your needs.

● Large granite slabs from a deconstructed bridge used as front door steps or landscaping features.

● Drawers gathered from multiple dressers and recombined to make a new dresser or storage unit.

● A dry-erase board or a chalkboard used as a child's tabletop or inside a cabinet for out of the way memos.

● Reclaimed stone, brick, or concrete blocks for landscaping projects, gardening, patio fireplaces.

● Bottles, vases, sporting items, toys, and animal statues turned into lamp bases.

  1. I am not creative at all, so really need a list like this to refer to for inspiration.

    1. I refer to a lot of bloggers and do a google search for things I want to keep that I think I should be rid of. Then BAM! Something gives me an idea to revamp into a project. After a few times of this, you will be running around the house looking for other things to do. And it gets crazier, you find yourself scoping out your family and friends' homes, secretly eyeing balling things that could be done and kindly suggest an idea... it kind of gets carried away like that. It becomes fun. ;)

  2. These are really great ideas. I particularly like the idea of repurposing furniture - it always seems like we have odd pieces around that we're attached to but don't seem to go anywhere. Perhaps we can give a few of them new life.

    1. I hope you do! It's amazing how creative we can get with almost anything. Furniture redo is my favorite. It gives you a chance to match up all of the mixed up stuff you love and bring it together. I had 5 living-room pieces that just functioned and now they look pulled together and all jazzed up. You'll love it. Be careful, it could be addicting. :)
