Updated Brass Chandelier

I finally found a brasstone chandelier at
a thrift shop that was exactly what I was looking for.

This is a medium sized chandelier with candlesticks. Perfect for turning into an antique fixture for our "country-ish" dining room.

After cleaning up the fixture, I applied a coat of flat black paint for a wrought iron look.

Then, a second coat.

Both top and bottom spray painted.

I replaced the plastic "candlesticks" and
decided to decorate them.

I printed out two sheets of an antique letter.

I cut the letter up to fit around the plastic tube "candles".  Then used a glue stick on the paper to apply them to the tubes.
I replaced the plastic tube candles and inserted clear flame bulbs.

I used a hook in the ceiling where the light fixture will be permanently, over the dining room table.

Hardwiring to the existing recessed lighting and switches requires sheetrock cutting, wire feeding and connecting.  That will be put off for this weekend  when I have a helper to fish wires.  :)

I'll post the finale photos here next week~

In the meantime, I have a preview of a long awaited light fixture.  (sigh) Patience is a virtue.

The update:

Connected to the dimmer switch on the recessed lighting in the room.

  4. The power of paint! Isn't it great to do a couple of simple changes to make it completely different? Two cans of paint, printed paper and a little glue stick. It can't get cheaper than that. :)

  5. I have done this for all but one of my ceiling lights. It is a great way to get a beautiful light but not with a huge price tag. I like the touch of the paper around the light's, so cute!

  15. I used old handwriting to blend in with my dining room decor, but I'm sure you can use anything from wallpaper to other printout designs. As long as nothing flammable is in contact with the wiring. I do hope you try your own makeover and have fun with it.

I am not a fan of gold at all. I love how you changed this to an iron looking metal instead with the paint. I would have never thought to have an ancient script on the candles like that. Very creative! Thank you for sharing his masterpiece with us at Countdown in Style!

  24. Great idea with the fan! I'm going to try that with an old brass fan in my office now that you mentioned it. It is amazing how paint can change anything. I even painted a cheap plastic chrome painted faucet fixture in office a copper metal color. It's a temporary dress up until I change the fixture out completely, but the copper looks awesome compared to the peeling condition of the current one.
Thank you for visiting, Laura! :)

  25. The brass was okay years ago, but I agree with you, I cringe and itch to fix it when I see it. I couldn't wait to find one and change it to black. To buy one outright, is rather expensive. This was a very cheap fixture for ten bucks, spray paint and a little glue and paper print outs.
    Thanks for stopping, Brittnei :)
