As guest designer for The Crafter's Workshop, I've been assigned stencil number 425 designed by Jaime Echt, the founder and Creative Director. The purpose of the One Stencil Four Ways series is to demonstrate the endless possibilities of one stencil used, based on numerous creators.
My project objective was to turn this old calendar frame into a serving tray utilizing the stencil as a design.
First, I measured to cut luan for the back of the frame and attached it with plenty of small nails. Then stained it to match up to the frame.
Then I measured to find the center of the frame to start my design layout. Using the stencil twice, fitting it on the base of the tray.
I painted one side, then reversed the stencil to catch the design in the center making it adjoined, while creating yet another design.
Then painted the reverse side.
For a worn wood look, I lightly sanded down the entire tray; frame and stenciled base.
Then applied a black stain rubbing in lightly and wiping off to age the wood frame.
Then sanded again.
I have a bunch drawer pulls, and chose to use this pair as handles for the tray.
Painting them in semi gloss black enamel made them more rustic to go with the wood.
I measured the hardware for screw placement and drilled the holes to attach them.
Then applied one coat of polyurethane to the entire tray.
When dried, I attached the handles.
And then it was ready to use.
How's that for a beat up old wood frame turned into a rustic and functional household item? I'm pleased with it... I'm smiling as I drink this hot chocolate loaded with chocolate whipped cream. Good thing I have plenty of nails to keep this tray together...this treat was a bit heavy.
